Assimilation of Geosat Altimeter Data for the Agulhas Current using the Ensemble Kalman Filter with a Quasi-Geostrophic Model

چکیده
The ring-shedding process in the Agulhas Current is studied using the ensemble Kalman lter to assimilate Geosat altimeter data into a two layer quasi-geostrophic ocean model. The properties of the ensemble Kalman lter are further explored with focus on the analysis scheme and the use of gridded data. The Geosat data consist of 10 elds of gridded sea-surface height anomalies separated 10 days apart which are added to a climatic mean eld. This corresponds to a huge number of data values and a data reduction scheme must be applied to increase the e ciency of the analysis procedure. Further, it is illustrated how one can resolve the rank problem occurring when a too large data set or a small ensemble is used.

The timemean circulation in the Agulhas region determined with the ensemble smoother
The time-mean circulation in the Agulhas Retroflection area is determined by combining TOPEX/POSEIDON data and a two-layer quasi-geostrophic model using the ensemble smoother. By taking the time-mean circulation as the unknown in the data assimilation procedure, the time-varying altimeter signal is used to constrain the time-mean field. The quasi-geostrophic model is applied as a strong constra...
متن کاملAn implementation of the Local Ensemble Kalman Filter in a quasi geostrophic model and comparison with 3D-Var
We perform data assimilation experiments with a widely used quasi-geostrophic channel model and compare the Local Ensemble Kalman Filter (LEKF) with a 3D-Var developed for this model. The LEKF shows a large improvement, especially in correcting the fast growing modes of the analysis errors, with a mean square error equal to about half that of the 3D-Var. The improvement obtained in the analysis...

The regional waters in Singapore Strait are characterized by complex hydrodynamic phenomena as a result of the combined effect of three large water bodies viz. the South China Sea, the Andaman Sea, and the Java Sea. This leads to anomalies in water levels and generates residual currents. Numerical hydrodynamic models are generally used for predicting water levels in the ocean and seas. But thei...
متن کاملEstimation of the optimal interpolation parameters in a quasi-geostrophic model of the Northeast Atlantic using ensemble methods
The SOPRANE operational forecasting system is based on a quasi-geostrophic (QG) model of the Northeast Atlantic. The assimilation scheme used to constrain the model consists of a Reduced Order Optimal Interpolation (ROOI) using an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) formulation. Corrections to the model fields at the surface are consistent with satellite along track data and a priori statistical infor...
متن کاملA comparison of assimilation results from the ensemble Kalman Filter and a reduced-rank extended Kalman Filter
The goal of this study is to compare the performances of the ensemble Kalman filter and a reduced-rank extended Kalman filter when applied to different dynamic regimes. Data assimilation experiments are performed using an eddy-resolving quasi-geostrophic model of the winddriven ocean circulation. By changing eddy viscosity, this model exhibits two qualitatively distinct behaviors: strongly chao...
